Yerba Mate
Small Tea
Mate, also known as Yerba mate is a traditional caffeine rich infusion from South America. In Argentina it is defined by law as the “national infusion.” It is also very popular in Bolivia, parts of southern Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Yerba Mate is traditionally served in a hollowed calabash gourd and sipped from a metal straw called a bombilla. Yerba Mate is meant to be shared and oftentimes you’ll find groups of friends sipping from one gourd. Though high in caffeine, yerba mate is usually free of the sort of caffeine crash one would typically experience after drinking a copious amount of coffee. The effects of caffeine from mate are also said to last much longer than coffee.
